How it began...
Most times, the only time one hears about the "Junction" is when there are heavy rains and resulting road obstructions. The principal route from the capital of Jamaica - Kingston - which brings one to important places of interest / capitals such as Port Antonio and Port Maria, the Junction, St. Mary - home to the world famous Castleton Botanical Gardens - has much more to offer.
The picturesque drive on a winding road in the foothills of the Blue Mountains immerses one in the lush vegetation and allows a view of the famous Wag Water River. Especially in rainy season, numerous springs and waterfalls with clear sparkling water can be seen gushing from the rocks which line the side of the road. The Junction has more than just unharnessed natural beauty to offer. Here, decades old traditions have been carefully preserved, being handed down from one generation to the next. Most persons live at one with Nature and so manage to survive to "ripe old age" with little or no illnesses. Here, talents abound. It is said that with poverty comes creativity. One finds ways and means to survive with little and at times nothing. Maybe this is made possible by the meditations allowed by the breath-taking views, clean crisp air and music of the flowing river. Maybe, the Junction is just a really special place... |
